DAVID YEADON — "Earth Gypsy" Supreme!

For over 25 years David Yeadon has been an author/illustrator of travel books (25) emphasizing hidden corner/backroad-exploration, and a regular travel correspondent for National Geographic, National Geographic Traveler, The Washington Post, New York Times, and many other major American, European and Asian travel magazines (over 200 features since 1990). His book THE BACK OF BEYOND - Travels to the Wild Places of the Earth (HarperCollins, 1991) described his worldwide search for the hidden, the unusual and the exotic. The sequel, LOST WORLDS - Exploring the Earth's Remote Places (HarperCollins, 1993), took readers even deeper into the remote places of the earth as did his Australia and South American chapters for National Geographic's publication: THE EARTH'S LAST WILD PLACES (1996).

In 1993, Yeadon received the Society of American Travel Writers Lowell Thomas Gold and Silver Medals for best travel book and best foreign travel feature - and subsequent awards. He is currently preparing two new books - a third world travel opus entitled SEEKING SHANGRI-LAS: Sensual Adventures in Idyllic Hideaways and an anthology of his own travel writings, illustrations and photographs entitled: EARTH GYPSY - Exploring Secret Places. Yeadon was recently appointed contributing editor to National Geographic Traveler Magazine and creator/writer of their regular HIDDEN AMERICA series. His latest books for National Geographic include. THE WORLD'S SECRET PLACES (2004), AMERICA'S SMALL TOWN ESCAPES (2000) and AMERICA'S HIDDEN CORNERS (1998). Also, having been a contributor to many of the Travelers' Tales anthology series (see over) he released: THE WAY OF THE WANDERER: Discovering Your True Self Through Travel (2001), with the same company as a culmination of almost three decades 'on the road.'

Yeadon has recently shifted the focus of his explorations from worldwide wanderings to a series of SEASONS IN... works each featuring one single small place. The first, SEASONS IN BASILICATA (HarperCollins, 2004) describes a year with his wife, Anne, in a remote Southern Italian hill village where pagan traditions still resonate deeply in the ancient agrarian lifeways of the local people. The second, SEASONS IN HARRIS (scheduled for July 2006) is a portrait of crofting and tweed weaving traditions and changes in the wild Outer Hebrides of Scotland. A third book, depicting life on the beautiful and remote Beara Peninsula of Southwest Ireland, will follow in 2008.

The Yeadons' home on a lake in New York's Hudson Valley is a tranquil haven of respite from all his "earth gypsy" journeyings...
